Wisdom and waiting

Our avarice, our greed, is currently thriving while so many go extinct and foul and strained beyond the capacity to be what they are meant to be.  Refuge Manager Dan Clark wrote “We are a part of the fate of Wisdom.” Wisdom, the albatross, has shaped my mind toward wondering what it’s like to be at sea for so long; and to have a life partner for over 60 years and return to the same place each year to give birth. Some would say that Wisdom holds time aloft. I am lost in a cloud wondering what she does day after day flying with the trade winds. Waiting time is an illusion. Talk to the eagle that sits on the nest as ice and snow pile on her head. Is she waiting? Or is she an eagle being an eagle. The osprey sitting on the nest, much later in the season, is not waiting either. She’s sitting through long days with the sun touching her head followed by cooler evenings on the nest when night becomes her shade.

Where do you go when you wait? In your body? On your nest? With your brain half asleep traveling long distances while flying through your day; as a deer, waiting under the tree through the night to be touched by the morning dew so they can become human? What does it mean to think like a woman or an osprey? How long has it been since I allowed myself to turn into anything? Always predicting my own responses. Never interacting with the elements but preparing for them. This is not a nest; this is a defense. This is not the way, but it is what I have known. And this is not about waiting like an eagle, or an osprey, or the misguided deer. I don’t know what it’s about. Some things are apparent, some remain a mystery.
